Campus Assessment, Response & Evaluation Team

North Central's C.A.R.E. Team is a resource for students, faculty and staff to report concerns about alarming or disruptive student behavior. The team assesses information, takes action when necessary, and tracks behavior concerns on campus.

The C.A.R.E. Team uses a proactive approach to discuss potential problems, intervene early, and develop appropriate courses of action for referred students. The goal is to support students who might be in distress and/or whose behavior is concerning to others, before a situation rises to a crisis level.

If your concern involves immediate safety risk to yourself or others, call 911 immediately, then submit a C.A.R.E. Team report.

When to Make a Referral

Does something seem off? Trust your instinct. There's no wrong referral. If you're unsure, make a referral:

  • Significant change in appearance, mood and/or social functioning
  • A sense that someone is struggling or something is wrong
  • Behavior that creates a disruptive or hostile environment
  • Actions that potentially endanger the safety of any member of our campus or broader community
  • Behavior that impacts one's ability to function appropriately and successfully on campus

The following behaviors, especially when more than one is present, may be signs that a student is in distress. Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Sudden change in demeanor or attitude
  • Student states intent to harm self
  • Student states intent to harm others
  • Student demonstrates erratic behaviors that significantly disrupts the learning/work environment
  • Displaced anger
  • Discussion, writing or drawings of weapon/bomb collection, use, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your concern involves an immediate safety risk to self or others, please stop and call 911 immediately. If the concern is not an emergency, use the .

The C.A.R.E. Team will review the referral and gather additional information as needed. Using the Threat Assessment Model created by the National Behavioral Intervention Team Association, they will determine what level of threat, if any, is present. The team will then select interventions corresponding to the nature of the concern and the assessed threat level. If a threat exists, we will likely choose to meet with the student(s)/employee(s). Other interventions could include documenting and monitoring, referrals to campus and community resources, Student Conduct and/or police involvement, etc.

Yes, though we prefer to know the reporter's name in case we have further questions or need clarification.

North Central has a strict policy against retaliation and will inform all individuals of the policy throughout the process in order to keep everyone safe. If you experience retaliation, please let the C.A.R.E. Team know.

In addition to ensuring the safety of our campus community, it's important that we demonstrate genuine care and concern to all parties involved, including the person who is the subject of a report. We want to make sure you're safe, help you get connected to the right resources, and support your academic goals.

It's better to be safe than sorry. If you're not sure, submit a report to us. We will determine if we're the correct recipient(s), and if not, we'll forward it to the correct person/team accordingly. If your concern involves an immediate safety risk to self or others, please stop and call 911 immediately.
