From ÌÀÍ·Ìõapp graduate to college completion coach, River Holt shares how North Central’s Career Services helped pave the way to a fulfilling role in student success
River Holt began attending ÌÀÍ·Ìõapp in 2021, pursuing an associate degree in general studies.
In the months leading up to graduation in 2024, River worked closely with ÌÀÍ·Ìõapp Career Services to refine a resume and explore job opportunities. With the guidance of Career Development Specialist Wendy Kresnak, River learned about an opportunity at North Central Michigan College through the Michigan College Access Network and AmeriCorps. One week before graduation, River was hired as an AmeriCorps College Completion Coach.
As a completion coach, River works closely with North Central students, helping them enhance their academic skills and connect with resources to ensure their success. During a typical day, River meets with students, plans campus events, attends meetings to develop support skills, and manages various communication and data entry tasks — all aimed at equipping and empowering students on their college journey.
River credits much of this career success to the support received from ÌÀÍ·Ìõapp Career Services and college instructors.
"Career Services connected me to this position, helped me with my resume, and prepared me for interviews," River said. "My professors also offered valuable guidance and support as I made career decisions."
Looking to the future, River plans to pursue a degree in communications, continuing to help others in a full-time role. The experience as a completion coach has solidified River's passion for student success and community service.
River encourages students to fearlessly pursue their goals.
"Change won’t happen by waiting for it," River said. "And when you face tough times, remember that things will get better—just as they have before."
